RAF
COSFORD School
of Technical Training
|
|
Over
the past seven years Cosford has been subject to large-scale investment
to match its training tasks to the ever increasing technological nature
of RAF aircraft and the rationalisation of ground training. The first
phase saw the move of aircraft engineering training from RAF Halton and
was completed in 1994. This also brought a change of unit title from
Number 2 School to Number 1 School of Technical Training and the
guardianship of the Queen's Colour which was bestowed on the Number 1
School.
The
second phase of training rationalisation is in place, following the move
of ground electronic and communication training from RAF Locking into a
brand new, state of the art, training facility.
No.
1 School of Technical Training provides Airframe, Avionics, Electrical,
Propulsion and Weapon training for RAF. The consolidation of engineering
principles, academics, and trade-related skills are essential for RAF
aircraft engineering tradesmen and women. It consist of the following
sqaudorns
|
Avionics
Training Squadron
Avionics
Training Squadron is comprised of Electro-Avionic Principles
Flight (EAPF) and Avionic Equipment Flight (AEF).EAPF provides
academic and practical training in Basic Electronics,
Communications, Radar and Flight Systems to all trade group 2
Avionics students. |
|
Survival
Equipment Propulsion & Weapon Training Squadron
Responsible
for the trade training of all Survival Equipment Fitters, the
training includes: the servicing and repair of parachutes, life
preservers, life rafts, air-sea rescue equipment, and
pyrotechnics. |
Airframe
Training Squadron
The
impressive 120,000 square feet training hall, housing Jaguar,
Harrier and Jet Provost ground training aircraft, is a major
feature of the largest of Cosford's training squadrons. The
accommodation, which also includes 21 classrooms, computer
suite, and a hydraulics principles workshop, has a training
capability in excess of 700 students per year. Courses contain a
comprehensive range of technical training subjects including;
Health and Safety, aircraft construction, airframe repairs,
hydraulics, flying controls, landing and arrestor gear, cabin
environmental control, fire and ice protection, fuel tanks, crew
oxygen systems and tool control. |
|
Line
Training Flight
The
final element of training for all basic trainees is with Line
Training Flight. Using Jet Provost aircraft, the flight is a
classic example of a training environment which brings together
both the theory and trade-related skills by using scenarios
which closely match those found in front-line service; including
the full range of ground handling, towing and marshalling
techniques. This is a challenging environment where students
must demonstrate the ability to do their job under pressure
whilst maintaining the highest standards of workmanship and
safety. This phase is the final stepping-stone from the training
world to an operational environment. |
