Kbely Open Day 14-09-91,

Kbely open day 1991,

During the period when the East block opened around 1990 many spotters went across to see the Russian equipment for the first time. In September 1991 it was announced that there would be a open day at Kbely near Prague .
The show was interesting because the Czechoslovakian Air Force used a verity of Russian types and it was announced that the Russian Air Force would participate. On arrival in Kbely it became clear that many more spotters had the same idea, our hotel was filled with spotters in expectation of things to come.

The air show was very interesting especially the amount of aircraft taking part in the flying program and on the static. Highlights included de display of the Russian Su-27 and a live firing of a ejection seat from a MiG-21 from the test and development unit of the Czechoslovakian Air Force.

For many people it was the there first encounter with the Czechoslovakian Air Force, and there last. As on 1 January 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Kbely was the first Czechoslovak military airfield and during the inter-war period it was the venue for several major public air shows. The first scheduled flight operated by CSA Czechoslovak Airlines (now CSA Czech Airlines) departed from Kbely for Bratislava in October 1923. Kbely airfield is not now used as a front line Czech Republic Air Force base, but it is utilised by military transport aircraft of the Czech Republic Air Force, and the VIP aircraft which transport Czech politicians.

Also on the base is the Aviation Museum Kbely. Creation of the museum started during the mid 1960s, the Prague Military Museum commenced a programme to recover, restore and preserve historic aircraft from around the country for eventual display at Kbely. Initially, one hangar was used and around fifty aircraft were placed on public display. The aircraft collection continued to grow and one of the original Wagner type hangars on the airfield was brought into use and now contains the earliest aircraft types on display.
