Hamamatsu Open House
2003
|
|
One
of our members visited the Hamamatsu 2003 open house and noted a few things,
amongst them the large crowd out at 8AM, the far better than expected weather
(many carrying umbrella's needed them for the sun instead of the forecasted rain
and mist) and the very short and patchy flying program.

Since
about two years, crowds are also invited to the south
side of the field and
although there are no (static) aircraft on display, the sun is in the back which
makes for far better photo opportunities than the north side, where the static
is located.

At
a Japanese air show, never be surprised at the local enthusiasts carrying
anything but the largest stick (500-1200 mm) on the latest digital bodies, most
carrying two each, inevitably accompanied by a stepladder. For the creative
taller European this presents no problem, since
in the friendly open atmosphere there is always room to pass and make the shots
one needs.

Anyway,
on to the flying program. With the local E-767 doing the best they are allowed, radome turning on top, the program opens at 9AM. After a while, two F-15's
showed up, doing a few uninspired passes and climbs, before the red/white Gifu
based XF-2B was allowed in. This one made a very good impression.
Afterwards a rescue show was put on by the local KV-107/MU-2 pair and the highlight of the morning display was the 19 local T-4's taking off, returning
later as a 16 ship box formation, with several pairs and another 8 doing some other trick. The afternoon program
consisted of … Blue Impulse and no more.
